Free Cisco Lab Scenario Basic VLAN Routing

Posted by: admin  :  Category: CCNA, CCNP, Packet Tracer, Switching, VLAN

Virtual LANs (VLANs) offer a method of dividing one physical network into multiple broadcast domains. However, VLAN-enabled switches cannot, by themselves, forward traffic across VLAN boundaries. For Inter-VLAN communication, a Layer 3 device such as a router is required. This Lab scenario will provide step-by-step instructions for configuring VLAN routing using an external router and 3 Layer 2 switches.

In this lab scenario we will use Cisco’s Packet Tracer to create an activity where we will configure and explore the operation of Port Security across 3 switches with 3 VLANs. You will learn to configure and view the default Layer 2 configuration and configure Port Security to limit access to the network via an individual switch port.

This lab was developed to help you gain a better understanding of how switches work within a redundant network and how Spanning Tree Protocol (STP) is implemented to prevent bridging loops from forming within the network.  Continue reading “Free Cisco Lab Packet Tracer Activity Basic STP” »

Free Cisco Lab Advanced VLAN Switching

Today network engineers are employing more and more multilayer switched networks. These networks have the advantage of high throughput level 2 switching while retaining the level 3 routing functionality. The secret to the high performance of these networks is the hierarchical design model employing 3 layers Core, Distribution, and Access. This coupled with the advent of VLAN which breaks up collision domains has made the multilayer switched networks the design of choice.
